Umra

The Prophet PBUH narrated why Umrah is an apology for every sin,

Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the next, and hajj, which is accepted will receive no other reward than Paradise.

[Muslim]

Umrah is the name given to a pilgrimage to Mecca, a shorter version of the annual Hajj gathering. The word “Umrah” in Arabic means “visiting a populated place”. Umrah offers an opportunity for Muslims to refresh their faith, seek forgiveness and pray for their needs. One who performs it is said to be cleansed of their sins. Umrah is one of the varieties of worship, a small pilgrimage, the so-called “small Hajj”. During the process of Umrah, rituals prescribed by Sharia are also performed, which Muslims must perform in the holy lands of Mecca and Medina.

The Historical Significance of Umrah

  • Umrah is not obligatory to perform like Hajj. Nevertheless, the Koran and reliable hadiths mention the importance and peculiarity of the small Hajj and emphasize its recommendatory nature.
  • In Surah al-Baqarah (verse 196) there is the following mention: “Perform Hajj and Umrah for the sake of Allah.” Umrah is placed along with Hajj
  • In the sacred tradition of the Sunnah there are words about the importance of the small Hajj: A messenger came to the Prophet and told about his father, who was already old and unable to go to Hajj. The Prophet answered him: “Perform Hajj and Umrah for your father!”
  • If a person has the opportunity to perform this religious ceremony, then he himself has the right to decide when to perform Umrah. Umrah is not just a sacred act. Pilgrimage to the shrines of Mecca helps a person expand his boundaries, refrain from negative thoughts and actions, enriching him morally. If Umrah occurs in the month of Ramadan, then it is considered equivalent to Hajj. Umrah tests and strengthens the faith of the pilgrim, and also frees him from sins. He begins to appreciate worldly goods and thank the Almighty for it. Reliable hadiths have come from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) on the merits of Hajj and Umrah.
